Mount Meru Safari Trekking

The trekking to Mount Meru is not only ideal as an acclimatization before the ascent to Mount Kilimanjaro, but many visitors and mountaineers prefer it for its beauty the amount of landscapes and ecosystems that are seen along the route to the top of the Meru .

The first day of the trekking can be considered authentic walking safari for the large number of animals that can be seen along the way, such as giraffes, gazelles, buffalos, elephants, zebras, antelopes, baboons, colobus monkeys and many birds that live in the mountains. forests where the path runs.

The mountain is the fifth highest peak in Africa and is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. It is located within the Arusha National Park, considered the jewel of Tanzania for its beauty and diversity. This privileged location allows the visualization of the animal fauna and flora of this precious and unknown park.

 

Route 1 – 3 days / 2 nights

The adventure begins!

 Day 1 

 Arusha / Momella Entrance (1.500 m) / Miriakamba Huts (2.500) 

Shelter Huts [Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner]

After your breakfast at 07:00 am we will be waiting for you at your hotel in Arusha to move to the National Park of Arusha, to the door of Momella where the expedition begins. After registration at the entrance we will start the walk next to an armed ranger of the National Park, who will accompany us on our first day of trekking, which is really a fascinating walking safari with wild animals such as buffalo, elephants, zebras, giraffes, gazelles, antelopes , baboons, colobus monkeys and lots of birds that live in forests where the trail runs. We will have dinner and spend the night in the Miriakamba Hut refuge, on a full board basis.
Vegetation: Humid, semi-tropical forest and montane forest.

 Day 2 

 Miriakamba Huts (2.500 m) / Saddle Huts (3.560 m) 

Shelter Huts [Include breakfast, Lunch and Dinner]

The trekking from the Miriakamba refuge to the Little Meru volcano (3,820 m) is short but the climb is quite hard. The trail will take us along a ridge where we will enjoy stunning views of the Meru crater. After lunch at the Saddle Shelter, we recommend going up to the summit of Little Meru, Little Meru to observe the sunset and descend before it gets dark again to the Saddle cabins. Dinner and accommodation at the Saddle refuge on a full board basis
Vegetation: montane forest and moor.

 Day 3 

 Saddle Huts (3.560 m) / Monte Meru Summit [  (4,560 m)/ Momella Gate (1,500 m) (4,560 m) / Momella Gate (1,500 m)

Shelter Refuge [Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner]

We start very early in the morning, at 1:00 am, our summit day at Mount Meru. We will ascend a steep slope to Rhino Point (3,800 m.) From where we will continue to Cobra Point (4,350 m).
We will reach the top of Meru (4,560 m) at dawn, the sunrise will not leave anyone indifferent and if the sky is clear we can see his older brother the Kilimanjaro.

The road to the top is very steep, with gravels and runs stretches of high-altitude rocky ridges. Occasionally, you can see antelopes that live high in the mountains like Reedbucks.

Without a doubt it is a route for brave and experienced people in mountain, the final part of the ascent is made along a spectacular narrow line between the inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater.

We rest and have a lunch in the Saddle refuge before continuing a gigantic and exhausting descent towards the Momella gate, exit of the Arusha National Park. At the door you will be waiting for our vehicle for the transfer to your hotel in Arusha.

Vegetation: Alpine desert, montane forest, moor and semi-tropical humid forest.

 Day 4 

Miriakamba Huts (2,500 m) / Momella Gate (1,500 m)

After breakfast, we will start the final stretch of the challenge to Mount Meru descending to the door of Momella. During your descent we will enter the thick junga of the tropical forest of Arusha Park. At the end of the route we will pass under a famous arch-shaped tree, Fig Tree Arch. Upon arrival at the door of Momella our driver will be waiting for the transfer to the Arusha hotel.
