Kilimanjaro – Machame Route
Traditionally called the “whiskey” route, it is perhaps the route that our Safari Bike Africa customers make the most. One of the reasons to be one of our favorite routes to Kilimanjaro is because of the good acclimatization to the altitude and consequently the high rate of success in doing the top. We will cross tropical jungles until we reach the Shira plateau, where the landscape changes to high mountain deserts where we will observe the perpetual snows of the Kilimanjaro summit from the center, before reaching the final part and face glaciers on the way to Barafu. During the trek, you sleep in tent camps.

The adventure begins!
Day 1
Arrival at the airport: KILIMANJARO – MOSHI
Stay: Honey Badger Lodge [Dinner included]
Welcome Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to the mythical capital city of Kilimanjaro, Moshi, where the hotel of your first night in Tanzania is located. After the briefing we will have a welcome dinner before the expedition to Kilimanjaro begins.
Day 2
Machame Entrance (1.750 m) / Machame Camp (3.000 m)
Stay: Tent [Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner]
We will start the trekking from the Machame gate. The road crosses the lush rainforests, rain forest, of the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. The sound of the jungle will captivate you.
Vegetation: Humid, semi-tropical forest.
Day 3
Machame Camp (3.000 m) / Shira 2 Camp (3.850 m)
Stay: Tent [Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner]
We continue ascending through an ecosystem of alpine moorlands while we observe the spectacular views of the summit of Kibo, one of the three mountains that make up the great Kilimanjaro, until we reach the camp of Shira 2.
Vegetation: Alpine forest.
Day 5
Barranco Camp (3.980 m) / Barafu Camp (4.680 m)
Stay: Tent [Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner]
Today’s trail will take us to the great Barranco wall, where we will climb the eastern wall and under the Helm glacier. In today’s journey we will acclimatize going up Karanga (4,960 m) and then descend to our camp in Barafu.
Vegetation: Alpine Desert.
Day 6
Barafu (4.680 m) / Uhuru Peak (5.895 m) / Mweka Camp (3.050 m)
Stay: Tent [Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner]
On the summit day, we will depart at dawn to face the steep slopes that will take us to Stella Point where we will skirt the ridge of the crater until we reach the Uhuru peak, where we will see the sunrise before descending to the Mweka camp.
High mountain, ice blocks and alpine desert.
Day 7
Mweka Camp (3.050 m)/ Mweka Entrance (1.640 m) / Moshi
Stay: Honey Badger Lodge [Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner]
We will continue descending through the humid forests towards the Mweka gate. After the delivery of the diplomas we will move to rest to our accommodation in Moshi.
Vegetation: Humid, semi-tropical forest.
